When you sign your rental agreement, the operator assigns you a unique PIN (typically 4-6 digits). You punch this into the keypad at the facility entrance to gain access. The system logs your entry time, creating a security record of who entered and when. Some facilities use key cards or fobs instead of (or in addition to) PINs. The principle is the same: only authorized people get in, and every access is recorded.
Every customer at an access-controlled facility receives a PIN or key card. It's part of the standard security package — and a key reason why self-storage is more secure than just leaving your stuff in a friend's garage.
