Roll-up doors operate on a spring mechanism — you simply lift the bottom and the door rolls up into a coil above the opening. They're made of corrugated steel or aluminum, which makes them durable and secure. Your padlock attaches to a hasp at the bottom of the door. The alternative is a hinged or swing door, which is common in walk-in units (especially M and L sizes that function more like rooms). Roll-up doors are most common on ground-floor and loading-bay-accessible units because they maximize the usable opening width.
If you're storing large items (furniture, appliances, equipment) that need wide access, look for units with roll-up doors. The full-width opening makes moving bulky items in and out much easier than dealing with a standard door frame.
