What are Safe Deposit Boxes?
Definition
A safe deposit box is a small, individually-lockable box inside a secure vault, available for rent on a monthly or annual basis. The word "safe" here means secure/vault — not that cash is what goes in. People store a wide range of valuables: wills, deeds, passports, jewellery, important documents, precious metals, family heirlooms, keepsakes with sentimental rather than purely financial value.
What this isn't (important context)
- Not exclusively a bank service. Traditional bank safe deposit boxes exist across Asia and are a legitimate option, but the modern safe deposit box market is increasingly non-bank — specialty operators offering longer access hours, better accessibility, and often more capacity than traditional bank branches. asia.storage lists the non-bank operators
- Not a cash deposit box. Despite the name, safe deposit boxes aren't specifically for cash. Any valuable fits
- Not a self-storage unit. Safe deposit boxes are much smaller (typically 7-30 litres of internal capacity) and sit inside a shared vault with its own access control — distinct from the larger lockable rooms that define self-storage
How it works
Standard safe deposit box operation:
- Box sizes range from small (fits a passport, jewellery pieces, a few documents) to large (fits a laptop-sized item, legal file boxes)
- Access requires both the operator's vault entry (keyed or biometric) and your personal box key or combination — a two-key model is standard
- Access is typically by appointment or during operator business hours; non-bank operators often extend hours beyond typical banking windows
- Contents are generally not inventoried by the operator — the box is private, and the operator doesn't know what you've stored unless you declare it for insurance purposes
- Insurance is usually either included (with modest default limits) or declared-value add-on for high-value contents
Who it's for
Individuals storing wills, legal documents, passports, jewellery, precious-metals holdings (coins and small bars), family archives, or anything else that's valuable enough to protect but small enough to fit in a vault box. Also small businesses storing shareholder certificates, physical IP (sealed documents, prototypes), and backup data media.
Where to find it on asia.storage
We currently know of two safe deposit box facilities on asia.storage — one in Bangkok and one in Singapore. Both are non-bank specialty operators. Browse the safe deposit boxes directory view or filter by market.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a bank safe deposit box and a non-bank one?
Bank boxes are typically bundled with a banking relationship and accessible during bank branch hours. Non-bank specialty operators often offer longer access hours, newer vault infrastructure, more size options, and sometimes additional services (bullion storage, climate control for sensitive items). asia.storage lists the non-bank options; bank boxes aren't in our scope.
What can I store in a safe deposit box?
Common contents: wills, property deeds, passports, jewellery, gold or silver coins and small bars, important legal documents, family heirlooms, backup data drives, physical IP. Prohibited across most operators: cash in large amounts (varies by operator and jurisdiction), firearms, perishables, hazardous materials, anything illegal. Confirm the operator's prohibited-items list before storing.
Is content in a safe deposit box insured?
Usually at modest default limits included in the rental fee, with declared-value add-on insurance available for high-value contents. Check the specific operator's included limits and add-on availability — these vary more than in standard self-storage.
Can someone access my box if I'm not there?
Not without authorisation. The two-key model means both your key/combination and the operator's vault access are required. Operators typically allow you to add authorised persons (spouse, lawyer, executor) with documented permission. In the event of death, access requires a court order or executor's documentation in most jurisdictions.
