What is Boat Storage?
Definition
Boat storage is dedicated storage for recreational and small commercial boats — on land or in water, indoors or outdoors — for the months (or years) when the boat isn't in use. The format varies more than standard self-storage because the asset itself does: a 4-metre dinghy, a 12-metre cruiser, and a 20-metre motor yacht need different combinations of space, access, climate protection, and marine-specific services.
How it works
A boat storage facility typically offers one or more of these formats:
- Dry stack storage — boats stored indoors on racking, retrieved by forklift and launched on request. Common at full-service marinas, most protection against weather and theft, highest cost
- Wet berth storage — boats stay in the water at a marina slip. Most convenient for frequent users, exposed to tide/weather, requires antifouling and more active maintenance
- Outdoor land storage — boats on trailers or cradles in a secured yard. Lowest cost, most exposure, suitable for off-season or long-term layup
- Covered outdoor — a middle ground; shelter from direct sun and rain, minimal climate control
Pricing is almost always length-based (per metre or per foot) rather than area-based, which is unusual compared to the rest of self-storage. Many facilities bundle launch/retrieval, antifoul, and wash-down services.
Who it's for
Boat owners in Asia's coastal and lake-cruising clusters — primarily Thailand's west coast (Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi), Malaysia (Langkawi, Johor), Singapore, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. Also increasingly relevant for houseboat and overnight-cruiser markets inland (Mekong, Yangtze).
Where to find it on asia.storage
We currently know of one dedicated boat storage facility on asia.storage — in Phuket, Thailand. See it alongside other vehicle-and-boat storage options on the vehicle storage directory view, or browse all facilities in Phuket.
What this isn't
- NOT a marina berth booking service — asia.storage lists storage facilities, not slip-rental bookings
- NOT yacht chartering or crewing
Frequently asked questions
Is boat storage climate-controlled?
Rarely. Most boat storage is outdoor or covered-outdoor, because the scale of a boat makes full climate control economically impractical. The exception is dry-stack facilities, which are indoors but typically ventilated rather than climate-controlled in the self-storage sense. If humidity, UV, or temperature exposure matters for your boat's interior finish or electronics, ask the facility specifically.
Do boat storage facilities offer maintenance services?
Often, especially at marina-attached facilities. Hull cleaning, antifouling, engine servicing, and winterisation are typically available as add-ons. Confirm with the operator before signing — standalone storage lots usually don't offer these.
How is boat storage priced?
Typically by length (per metre or per foot per month), not by square area. Factor in launch/retrieval fees for dry-stack and seasonal services where applicable.
