What is Vehicle Storage?
Definition
Vehicle storage is storage for vehicles that owners don't need day-to-day — classic cars, motorcycles, scooters, boats, trailers, caravans, RVs. The format varies by vehicle: climate-controlled indoor units for classic cars and collectibles, open-air fenced lots for RVs and trailers, and multi-level indoor parking for scooters and sedans. Unlike standard self-storage, vehicle storage charges by vehicle size rather than square-metre footprint, and the operator takes on a different liability profile around battery maintenance, tyre pressure, and start-up schedules.
How it works
Formats vary by what you're storing:
- Indoor climate-controlled — closed garage-style units with temperature and humidity management. Standard for classic cars, high-value collectibles, and anything with sensitive upholstery or electronics. Highest cost, best protection
- Indoor non-climate — closed units without climate management. Fine for daily-driver sedans, scooters, and motorcycles stored during long trips
- Covered outdoor — carport-style shelter, protection from direct sun and rain. Common for mid-range cars, trailers, mid-size RVs
- Open outdoor fenced — a secured outdoor lot. Lowest cost, suitable for RVs, trailers, and boats on trailers
Standard features at most vehicle storage facilities: perimeter fencing, CCTV, access-controlled gates, individual unit alarms (for indoor), and sometimes trickle-charging, tyre inflation, or periodic engine start-up as add-on services. Pricing is usually per vehicle-length (indoor) or per parking-slot size (outdoor), billed monthly.
Who it's for
Classic-car collectors, motorcycle owners managing seasonal use, expat residents storing a vehicle during travel, small businesses with a fleet, boat and trailer owners, and the growing cohort of RV enthusiasts across Southeast Asia and India.
Where to find it on asia.storage
We currently know of six vehicle storage facilities on asia.storage — concentrated in India (Bangalore, Gurgaon, Noida) and Malaysia (Petaling Jaya), plus one marina-based facility in Phuket. Browse the full vehicle storage directory view or filter by market.
What this isn't
- NOT short-term parking (hourly or daily parking) — that's a different industry
- NOT auto repair, detailing, or dealership services
- NOT valet-service car storage (where the operator drives the vehicle) — the customer retains access and operates their own vehicle in and out
Frequently asked questions
Can I store a vehicle long-term without driving it?
Yes, but confirm with the facility whether they offer trickle-charging and periodic start-up services. Vehicles that sit idle for 3+ months can suffer battery drain, flat spots on tyres, and fuel-system issues. Facilities serving the classic-car market usually include these as add-ons.
Is my vehicle insured while in vehicle storage?
The facility typically carries liability insurance for its premises, but your own vehicle insurance is what covers the vehicle itself. Confirm with your insurer that comprehensive cover applies while in storage — some policies restrict cover for vehicles not actively registered or operated.
Do vehicle storage facilities accept RVs, boats, or trailers?
Depends on the facility's spec. Outdoor lots usually accept all three; indoor units may have height or length limits that exclude larger RVs and boats on trailers. Confirm dimensions with the operator before booking.
How does vehicle storage differ from drive-up storage?
Vehicle storage is defined by what's stored (a vehicle). Drive-up storage is defined by how any unit is accessed (you drive your car up to the unit's own door to load and unload — regardless of what you're storing inside). A facility can offer both, or either, or neither. See Drive-Up Storage for the access-architecture term.
