What is container storage?

Definition

Container storage is an outdoor-yard model where businesses and individuals rent whole shipping containers (typically 20ft or 40ft) for storage. The containers sit on a secured yard, often with basic security, lighting, and access control. Pricing is usually per container per month — much cheaper per cubic metre than traditional self-storage, in exchange for less climate protection and typically less-convenient access.

How it works

The physical format is simpler than self-storage:

Who it's for

Businesses with bulk inventory that doesn't need climate control (construction materials, furniture, bulk packaging, equipment), individuals in-between moves holding household goods for months, importers using containers as temporary holding before customs clearance, and anyone operating in markets where self-storage is still rare and expensive.

Where to find it on asia.storage

Container storage is an emerging category we're starting to track. It's most relevant in Southeast Asia secondary markets where land is cheaper than central-city real estate — Jakarta periphery, Manila-Luzon secondary cities, Bangkok outskirts, Phnom Penh, Hanoi and HCMC industrial zones, Yangon. The service tag and facility_type both exist in our schema. We may list dedicated container-storage operators as the segment matures.

Frequently asked questions

How much does container storage cost?

Per container per month, usually a fraction of what the same cubic volume would cost in self-storage. The exact amount varies by market, delivery arrangement, and whether the yard offers insulated containers. Specific amounts shift with real-estate and shipping-container surplus pricing — contact facilities directly for current rates.

Will my goods be safe from heat and humidity?

Container storage trades climate protection for cost. Non-insulated containers in Asian summer heat regularly reach 40-50°C inside, which damages electronics, cosmetics, furniture finishes, and anything sensitive to heat or condensation. Insulated containers reduce the risk but are rarer. Store heat-sensitive goods elsewhere.

How do I access my container?

Access models vary. Some operators offer appointment-based gate access during business hours; others require 24-48 hour notice. 24/7 self-access is uncommon in this segment. Confirm access arrangements before signing.

Can the operator deliver the container to my site?

Many do, for an additional delivery and collection fee. This "pod-style" delivery option is common for individuals in-between moves. See pod storage for the related purpose-built portable-container category.
